Jonathan Hilton makes announcement of CJA Award winners.
The Chess Journalist Editor John Hillery is seated at right.

The CJA Awards winners list is announced and minutes of the annual CJA meeting will come soon. Here are a few important tidbits of information.

Results of voting for officers of CJA:
      President: Jerry Hanken
      Vice President: Alexandra Kosteniuk
      Secretary/Treasurer: Ira Lee Riddle (deceased)

Jerry Hanken was unable to attend the meeting due to recent injuries which left him hospitalized in California. This left Randall Hough as the highest ranking officer to conduct the annual meeting. Two other officers Editor John Hillery and Webmaster J. Franklin Campbell were also present. With the recent death of Ira Lee Riddle the office of Secretary/Treasurer is left unfilled. Since this could not be resolved during the CJA annual meeting it was decided that the CJA Executive Board would set up a search committee to find a suitable volunteer to do this important job. Jonathan Hilton and Stephen Dann have already volunteered to serve on this committee. In the meanwhile, long-time Secretary/Treasurer Randall Hough has agreed to continue on a temporary basis (maximum 6 months) till this office can be filled. Randy was officially thanked for his years of service to CJA. To make this job more attractive the members passed a motion granting a $25/month stipend for the combined offices of Membership Secretary and Secretary/Treasurer, effective immediately.

The list of annual CJA Award winners is now available. Additional text may be added later.

31 July 2009: Secretary-Treasurer Randy Hough provides financial reports and updated membership list

As I complete 13 years of volunteer work as CJA's Secretary/Treasurer, I present the 2008-2009 financial statement and 2009-2010 budget for discussion at our annual meeting. Interest rates dropped a bit, and we lagged behind budget on memberships (partially masked by multi-year payments), advertising (though $450 is still far more than what we realized in many previous years -- nothing!), and awards competition entries (though expenses were far under budget also). Contingency funds were barely touched; that may change in the future.

Like everyone else, I was saddened by the premature passing of my presumed successor, Ira Lee Riddle. I'm optimistic that we'll find a qualified successor at our meeting. Now, let's all recruit more members and help our editor put out an even better magazine.

Dr. Ira Lee Riddle
Dr. Ira Lee Riddle

10 July 2009: Dr. Ira Lee Riddle dies in France

CJA members were shocked to receive this notification from Polly Riddle, the wife of Dr. Ira Lee Riddle, that he had died recently while on vacation in France. CJA President Jerry Hanken issued the following statement:

We received with shock the sad news of the sudden passing of our Vice President, Ira Lee Riddle. Ira had served CJA for many years and was running unopposed for the very important position of Secretary/Treasurer, a hard job held by Randy Hough and discharged with distinction for the last 13 years. A full obit of Ira, who was a personal friend, will be in the next Chess Journalist and, we hope, in Chess Life. In Ira’s honor, I urge all members to vote for him in the mail balloting. We will choose a new Secretary/Treasurer at our annual meeting in Indianapolis. My heart goes out to Ira’s wife of many years, Polly Riddle, who supported Ira in his chess volunteerism for so many years. Rest in peace my friend. The world of US Chess will miss you and the CJA has lost one of its greatest supporters.

Jerry Hanken
CJA President

9 June 2009: Awards Chairman extends deadline to June 15, 2009

Dear fellow chess journalists:

Due to the personnel cuts at the U.S. Chess Federation, the Chess Journalists of America is granting a deadline extension for submitting articles to the yearly Awards. The new deadline is Monday, June 15, 2009.

The new online-entry process has kept things running smoothly thanks to the devoted work of our Webmaster, Franklin Campbell. The number of entries has continued to grow at a rapid pace. So far, we have 15 volunteer judges. There is still time to volunteer, so please write to cja-entries2009@chessjournalism.org if you would like to step up. Thank you.

29 May 2009: Announcement by Chairman of the Elections Committee

To the Membership,

As the time of elections and voting for CJA Officers quickly approaches, the elective offices are found to be very short on nominations. Current nominations stand at Jerry Hanken for the position of President, and Dr. Ira Lee Riddle for the position of Secretary-Treasurer. Currently standing at one (1) nomination of the two (2) needed for inclusion on the ballot is Alexandra Kosteniuk for the position of Vice President. [Alexandra Kosteniuk has now received the second required nomination, see Nominations - Officers for full list. -- Webmaster]

I would like to remind everyone of the appropriate section of the Bylaws, as posted in the 1 April 2009 web announcement and the March 2009 issue of The Chess Journalist:

"An election of Officers shall be held every second year. Each candidate, including incumbents, must be nominated by at least two Regular or Honorary Members who are not themselves candidates. The deadline for receipt of nominations shall be set by the Executive Board and published in The Chess Journalist at least sixty days in advance of the deadline. Nominations must be mailed to both the Secretary and Editor. The list of candidates shall be printed in The Chess Journalist together with the official mail ballot, voting instructions, the deadline for receipt of the ballots, and a statement of no more than one hundred words by each candidate. Write-in votes shall be allowed.

...

In an election year if, by the time of the annual membership meeting, the mail ballot nomination and election system has failed to fill an elective office, then the voting members (Regular and Honorary) present at the annual membership meeting are empowered to nominate and elect a candidate to fill that office."

I urge you, the CJA members, to submit your nominations for the elective offices.

I can be contacted by email at: nominations@chessjournalism.org, or by postal mail at:
366 Gladwin Ave, Clawson, MI 48017.

Thank you for your participation.

Tim Moroney
Chairman of the Elections CommitteeXXX

A new slate of CJA officers will be elected in 2009. The relevant portion of the Bylaws reads as follows:

"An election of Officers shall be held every second year. Each candidate, including incumbents, must be nominated by at least two Regular or Honorary Members who are not themselves candidates. The deadline for receipt of nominations shall be set by the Executive Board and published in The Chess Journalist at least sixty days in advance of the deadline.                                                          ...
In an election year if, by the time of the annual membership meeting, the mail ballot nomination and election system has failed to fill an elective office, then the voting members (Regular and Honorary) present at the annual membership meeting are empowered to nominate and elect a candidate to fill that office."

18 July 2008: CJA Officers vote down motion to instruct Treasurer

CJA President Jerry Hanken has instructed that this information be published.

On 16 July 2008 the CJA Vice President Ira Lee Riddle put forward the following motion (at the suggestion of past VP Daren Dillinger):

Resolved: That the Treasurer of the Chess Journalists of America to be instructed to comply with the law, and bring ALL financial records of which he is the custodian of during his terms of office; to the August 2009 By-law required meeting of the CJA Executive Board, so as to be available to a verification inspection of any officer present. And to also bring the same to the annual CJA membership meeting, to have available to turn over to a possible new CJA Treasurer.

This motion was voted down 3-1 (with one abstention by the CJA Secretary-Treasurer, who was addressed within the motion) with the following comments.

President Jerry Hanken: "On Iras' Motion, I vote no. The reason for my vote is that the Secy Teasurer has always provided financial information to all on request and has always brought his records to the annual meeting which Ira has only attended recently when his way was paid as CJA Bylaws Chair. This smells of the insane campaign to relentlessly attack the Officers of CJA by a disappointed office seeker."

Vice President Ira Lee Riddle: Voted yes. "I think that our finances should be available to all members whenever asked for, and was trying to set up a rule for future Treasurers to ensure this happening. When I was President/editor/publisher, I put our balance sheet into every issue of the Chess Journalist, so that no one would question where and what monies were being spent."

Editor John Hillery: "I vote No. Reasons: 1) The motion is redundant, as the Treasurer has routinely done everything in this area required by the CJA Constitution. 2) The wording of the motion is a deliberate insult to another officer. In a face-to-face meeting, I would have demanded the motion be ruled out of order for this reason. Under the circumstances, I choose to vote it down instead."

Secretary-Treasurer Randall Hough: "I abstain."

Webmaster Franklin Campbell: "I vote NO as well, pretty much for the same reasons as JH. I think Daren's wording for this motion was poor and should have been rewritten before it was submitted. I would certainly like to see a financial report with explanations for any significant checks written just to clear up any questions about how CJA money is being spent, but this motion doesn't speak to this and is unnecessary."

Our Awards Committee Chairman Jonathan Hilton has issued the following announcement extending the deadline for mailing entries for the 2008 CJA Awards Program. For the full announcement of the Awards Program see the Press Release.

In order to accommodate articles published in the June 2008 issue of The Chess Journalist, CJA Awards Committee Chairman Jonathan Hilton and CJA President Jerry Hanken have extended the absolute postmark deadline for the 2008 CJA Awards to June 15, 2008. Entries received later than June 7 will be sent to judges later than other entries, so it is still advisable to submit entries before the original deadline. FYI, fellow chess journalists:

Last night I recorded an interview with John Watson that will be aired on his chess.fm show starting Tuesday (and which will last for a week). The interview lasts about 1.5 hours, and covers many topics in my book (Engaging Pieces). Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to cover the CJA, although we do talk about the process of interviewing and other things of interest to chess journalists. The CJA does come up once or twice, but only indirectly. If you're not a member of the ICC (which I'm not) you can still listen to the interview by taking a free 1-week trial membership.

Best, Howard Goldowsky

I am pleading for member input. If you attend the meeting please consider sending me a report, from a few sentences to a lengthy and detailed report. Take your digital camera and send me some photos. Send them to me using the contact information at Contact Webmaster. -- Webmaster

Check the playing site for an announcement of the location of the meeting rooms (there are three meeting rooms required for the USCF schedule, so be sure to find the correct room).

Do you publish a magazine or a web site? You should submit the better work you publish, whether it's your own work or that of others. 27 April 2006: FIDE Presidential Race Heats Up

As the FIDE election for President during the Torino election approaches things are heating up. Both major candidates now have web sites supporting their campaigns.

I believe current president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov obtained a site to respond to the high quality site of his opponent Bessel Kok. Kok's campaign and web site is called The Right Move while Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's is Chess FIDE Fidelity ... interesting choice of names for both parties.

The Torino (Turin), Italy Chess Olympiad web site is Olimpiadi degli Scacchi Torino 2006 and the Olympiad takes place 20 May - 4 June 2006. The election will take place during the Olympiad. The web site has a section for accredited journalists. I've never successfully logged in using IE. Today I can't log in using Firefox, which normally works. The site doesn't seem to be fully functional yet. -- Franklin Campbell, CJA Webmaster

Items for consideration must have been published between June 1, 2005 and May 31, 2006. A new category has been added this year: Category 39: Best piece with a chess related theme to appear in a non-chess or mainstream publication (this could include on-line publications if they are not normally chess related).

REMINDER: Please don't forget to submit, along with your regular CJA awards nominations, nominations for the new mainstream article catagory. Nominations for this catagory are free.
