9 June 2009: Awards Chairman extends deadline to June 15, 2009

Dear fellow chess journalists:

Due to the personnel cuts at the U.S. Chess Federation, the Chess Journalists of America is granting a deadline extension for submitting articles to the yearly Awards. The new deadline is Monday, June 15, 2009.

The new online-entry process has kept things running smoothly thanks to the devoted work of our Webmaster, Franklin Campbell. The number of entries has continued to grow at a rapid pace. So far, we have 15 volunteer judges. There is still time to volunteer, so please write to cja-entries2009@chessjournalism.org if you would like to step up. Thank you.

29 May 2009: Announcement by Chairman of the Elections Committee

To the Membership,

As the time of elections and voting for CJA Officers quickly approaches, the elective offices are found to be very short on nominations. Current nominations stand at Jerry Hanken for the position of President, and Dr. Ira Lee Riddle for the position of Secretary-Treasurer. Currently standing at one (1) nomination of the two (2) needed for inclusion on the ballot is Alexandra Kosteniuk for the position of Vice President. [Alexandra Kosteniuk has now received the second required nomination, see Nominations - Officers for full list. -- Webmaster]

I would like to remind everyone of the appropriate section of the Bylaws, as posted in the 1 April 2009 web announcement and the March 2009 issue of The Chess Journalist:

"An election of Officers shall be held every second year. Each candidate, including incumbents, must be nominated by at least two Regular or Honorary Members who are not themselves candidates. The deadline for receipt of nominations shall be set by the Executive Board and published in The Chess Journalist at least sixty days in advance of the deadline. Nominations must be mailed to both the Secretary and Editor. The list of candidates shall be printed in The Chess Journalist together with the official mail ballot, voting instructions, the deadline for receipt of the ballots, and a statement of no more than one hundred words by each candidate. Write-in votes shall be allowed.

...

In an election year if, by the time of the annual membership meeting, the mail ballot nomination and election system has failed to fill an elective office, then the voting members (Regular and Honorary) present at the annual membership meeting are empowered to nominate and elect a candidate to fill that office."

I urge you, the CJA members, to submit your nominations for the elective offices.

I can be contacted by email at: nominations@chessjournalism.org, or by postal mail at:
366 Gladwin Ave, Clawson, MI 48017.

Thank you for your participation.

Tim Moroney
Chairman of the Elections Committee

1 April 2009: Nominations Sought

A new slate of CJA officers will be elected in 2009. The relevant portion of the Bylaws reads as follows:

Any member interested in serving as President, Vice-President, or Secretary-Treasurer should submit his nominating petition and candidate statement to the Chairman of the Elections Committee, Tim Moroney (366 Gladwin Ave., Clawson, MI 48017, email: nominations@chessjournalism.org), who will forward the list of nominations to the Secretary-Treasurer and Editor, by June 1, 2009.

Note: nominations will be displayed on the Nominations Received web page as they are received..

18 July 2008: CJA Officers vote down motion to instruct Treasurer

CJA President Jerry Hanken has instructed that this information be published.

On 16 July 2008 the CJA Vice President Ira Lee Riddle put forward the following motion (at the suggestion of past VP Daren Dillinger):

Resolved: That the Treasurer of the Chess Journalists of America to be instructed to comply with the law, and bring ALL financial records of which he is the custodian of during his terms of office; to the August 2009 By-law required meeting of the CJA Executive Board, so as to be available to a verification inspection of any officer present. And to also bring the same to the annual CJA membership meeting, to have available to turn over to a possible new CJA Treasurer.

This motion was voted down 3-1 (with one abstention by the CJA Secretary-Treasurer, who was addressed within the motion) with the following comments.

President Jerry Hanken: "On Iras' Motion, I vote no. The reason for my vote is that the Secy Teasurer has always provided financial information to all on request and has always brought his records to the annual meeting which Ira has only attended recently when his way was paid as CJA Bylaws Chair. This smells of the insane campaign to relentlessly attack the Officers of CJA by a disappointed office seeker."

Vice President Ira Lee Riddle: Voted yes. "I think that our finances should be available to all members whenever asked for, and was trying to set up a rule for future Treasurers to ensure this happening. When I was President/editor/publisher, I put our balance sheet into every issue of the Chess Journalist, so that no one would question where and what monies were being spent."

Editor John Hillery: "I vote No. Reasons: 1) The motion is redundant, as the Treasurer has routinely done everything in this area required by the CJA Constitution. 2) The wording of the motion is a deliberate insult to another officer. In a face-to-face meeting, I would have demanded the motion be ruled out of order for this reason. Under the circumstances, I choose to vote it down instead."

Secretary-Treasurer Randall Hough: "I abstain."

Webmaster Franklin Campbell: "I vote NO as well, pretty much for the same reasons as JH. I think Daren's wording for this motion was poor and should have been rewritten before it was submitted. I would certainly like to see a financial report with explanations for any significant checks written just to clear up any questions about how CJA money is being spent, but this motion doesn't speak to this and is unnecessary."

2 July 2008: "2008 USCF Delegates' Call" available on-line

3 June 2008: Annual CJA Meeting Announced for 8 August 2008 (3-4pm)

The annual CJA meeting will be between 3 and 4 PM on Friday 8 August 2008 during the US Open in Dallas.

31 May 2008: Deadline for CJA Awards Program Entry Extended to June 15, 2008

Our Awards Committee Chairman Jonathan Hilton has issued the following announcement extending the deadline for mailing entries for the 2008 CJA Awards Program. For the full announcement of the Awards Program see the Press Release.

In order to accommodate articles published in the June 2008 issue of The Chess Journalist, CJA Awards Committee Chairman Jonathan Hilton and CJA President Jerry Hanken have extended the absolute postmark deadline for the 2008 CJA Awards to June 15, 2008. Entries received later than June 7 will be sent to judges later than other entries, so it is still advisable to submit entries before the original deadline. The Committee Chair intends to mail judges their first packages of submitted entries June 9, to ensure judges have a full six weeks to report their scores.

13 October 2007: Howard Goldowsky on John Watson's Chess.FM Show "Chess Talk"

FYI, fellow chess journalists:

Last night I recorded an interview with John Watson that will be aired on his chess.fm show starting Tuesday (and which will last for a week). The interview lasts about 1.5 hours, and covers many topics in my book (Engaging Pieces). Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to cover the CJA, although we do talk about the process of interviewing and other things of interest to chess journalists. The CJA does come up once or twice, but only indirectly. If you're not a member of the ICC (which I'm not) you can still listen to the interview by taking a free 1-week trial membership.

Best, Howard Goldowsky
